The only form known to be imported, processed, or distributed for use in the United States is chrysotile. Raw chrysotile asbestos was imported into the US as recently as 2022 for use by the chlor-alkali industry, via the final rule following amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act of 2016.
There are still 40,000 American deaths per year from exposure to asbestos which contributes to almost half of the 90,000 worldwide figure, and it far outweighs the 5,000 deaths in the UK. It is still estimated that 125 million people worldwide remain at risk of occupational exposure to asbestos and is a timely message to the countries of Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Brazil, and Zimbabwe where asbestos is still being produced.
